On September 15, 2011 Genocide Watch upgraded South Africa to stage 6 (Preparation) in response to continuing racially charged crimes and alarming murder rate of Boer farmers. Since 1994 there have been nearly 4,000 recorded farm murders in South Africa, more than Zimbabwe ever recorded, and over 10,000 attacks against white owned farms. If statistics are any indication there is a storm clouding the once celebrated rainbow nation.
Joost and Bheka are unlikely friends in a country where everything appears to be about race. Joost is Afrikaans, and Bheka is Zulu. Joost is aggressive while Bheka is calm and cunning. The only similarities they seem to share is that they both excel at rugby and come from money. Yet despite their differences they are inseparable, even during school holidays which is exactly where they find themselves with Bheka’s family when civil war erupts in South Africa. It is a war they have feared their entire lives and they know it can become a conflict where you don’t pick your side but it is determined for you by the colour of your skin.
When they discover Joost’s younger sister is in danger he leaves immediately to rescue her, accompanied by Bheka’s fierce bodyguard Mandla. Only one problem, she is in the heart of Johannesburg and he is in Kwazulu-Natal. Soon after Bheka’s father is arrested he too finds himself trapped within the conflict and searching for answers about the attacks that perpetrated the war. Before they can escape they are forced into fighting, suffering hardships that jeopardize alliances, survival, and their understanding of the world. On journeys to finding answers and protecting loved ones they both become engrained in the fabrics of the war, discovering that enemies and allies are not always who we expect them to be.

Amazing book. Although the novel is about war and genocide the author creates relatable characters, suspenseful action, and beautiful imagery. I ordered this because of my affection of South Africa, I was not expecting such moving literature, twists, and insightful plot developments. I recommed this to anyone who enjoys stories about Africa, politics, history, or coming of age friendship stories. 5 stars!Product details
